Workshop on Phenotypes and Genetic Analysis of Complex Traits

Dates: September 29-October 1, 1999
Organizers: Suzanne Leal, Jurg Ott, Nelson Freimer

A workshop entitled Phenotypes and Genetic Analysis of Complex Traits will be held at The Rockefeller University, September 29 - October 1, 1999.  The purpose of this workshop is to examine phenotype definition for complex traits and, in particular, psychiatric and neuro-psychiatric traits and statistical genetic approaches to analyze these traits.  This will be a small workshop with 32 participants including the organizers.  Participants were chosen based on their expertise in the fields to be covered during the workshop.

Although the current phenotype definitions clinically define a patient’s morbidity, a different phenotype definition may better describe the genetic aspects of the disease etiology.  The development of alternative phenotype definitions and statistical analysis for complex traits may help to facilitate findings which can be replicated across studies.

Talks and discussions in the workshop will include the following topics: psychometric measurements which are qualitative and quantitative, animal models, biological markers, brain imaging, incorporating phenotypes in the genetic analysis, multivariate analysis and mapping multiple disease gene loci.

The workshop is expected to result in new ideas and perhaps in a consensus on new strategies for tackling some of the problems addressed.  It is planned that the proceedings of the workshop be published.

This workshop is supported by a grant from the NIMH
