Monday through Friday August 8-12, 2005
An advanced gene mapping\linkage course will be held at the GSF in Munich from Monday through Friday, August 2-6, 2004. Please note: this course was previously called the advanced linkage course and was held in Zurich, the name has been changed to reflect the expanded scope of the course in the past few years.
The cost of the 5 day course is 825 EUR for researchers from an academic institution, and 1,600 EUR for individuals from private (for profit) companies. This fee covers tuition, course related expenses (handouts, etc.) and the social evening but not room and board .
The maximum number of participants is 20. Emphasis in this course is on the analysis of complex disease traits. It will include theory as well as practical exercises. The exercises will be carried out using a variety of computer programs. TOPICS include: parametric analysis of quantitative and qualitative traits; penetrance models; sibpair analysis (quantitative and qualitative traits); non-parametric methods for analyzing extended family pedigree data; variance components analysis, association studies (haplotype relative risk, transmission disequilibrium test, case-control); models of genetic heterogeneity; sample size estimations, and simulation studies to evaluate power and significance levels. The organizers of this course are Suzanne Leal (Baylor College of Medicine) and Tim Strom (GSF). The instructors for the course are: Laura Almasy, David Clayton, Heather Cordell, Suzanne Leal, Bertram Mueller-Myhsok, and Thomas Wienker.
A reduced course fee of 100 EUR and travel stipends up to 800 EUR are available. Eligibility requirements are: (1) sufficient background and practical experience in linkage analysis, and (2) demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to students and postdoctoral researchers. To apply for the stipend, please attach a letter of request and enclose a letter of reference and proof of student or postdoctoral status.
Knowledge of linkage analysis/statistical genetics are screening criteria for selection of participants. Please describe your experience in detail. We may contact you personally to discuss this with you further.
Applicants who are not experienced with the LINKAGE programs should obtain a copy of "Handbook for Human Genetic Linkage," (Terwilliger and Ott, Johns Hopkins Univ. Press) and review the sections on file format and basic linkage analysis before the course. Applicants should also be comfortable working with UNIX.
