An advanced gene mapping course will be held at the GSF in Munich from Monday through Friday, July 29 - August 2, 2002. Please note: this course was previously called the advanced linkage course and held in Zurich, the name has been changed to reflect the expanded scope of the course in the past few years.
The cost of the 5 day course is 780 USD for researchers from an academic institution, and 1,300 USD for individuals from private (for profit) companies. This fee covers tuition and course related expenses (handouts, etc.) but not room and board .
A social evening will be held which will include a tour of a museum and a Bavarian style meal. There is no additional fee to attend the social evening. The maximum number of participants is 20. Emphasis in this course is on the analysis of complex disease traits. It will include theory as well as practical exercises. The exercises will be carried out using a variety of computer programs. TOPICS include: parametric analysis of quantitative and qualitative traits; penetrance models; sibpair analysis (quantitative and qualitative traits); non-parametric methods for analyzing extended family pedigree data; variance components analysis, association studies (haplotype relative risk, transmission disequilibrium test, case-control); models of genetic heterogeneity; sample size estimations, and simulation studies to evaluate power and significance levels. The instructors for the course are: Laura Almasy, David Clayton, Heather Cordell, Josephine Hoh, Suzanne Leal, Jurg Ott, Tim Strom and Thomas Wienker.
A reduced course fee of 90 USD and travel stipends up to 780 USD are available to four eligible participants. Eligibility requirements are: (1) sufficient background and practical experience in linkage analysis, and (2) demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to students and postdoctoral researchers. To apply for the stipend, please attach a letter of request and enclose a letter of reference and proof of student or postdoctoral status.
Knowledge of linkage analysis/statistical genetics are screening criteria for selection of participants. Please describe your experience in detail. We may contact you personally to discuss this with you further.
Applicants who are not experienced with the LINKAGE programs should obtain a copy of "Handbook for Human Genetic Linkage," (Terwilliger and Ott, Johns Hopkins Univ. Press) and review the sections on file format and basic linkage analysis before the course. Applicants should also be comfortable working with UNIX.
